Winona Community Foundation (WCF) is in its 5^th year of bringing Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) to the community as a way to teach young people about the art of giving and the importance of civic involvement.  Youth programs like this are on the cutting edge of a growing national movement to infuse young people into leadership and decision-making roles. 

Youth in Philanthropy taps into the energy of young people as they address local needs.  In general, this is a youth based version of the foundation’s grant making committee.  WCF has selected two groups, WACS 3^rd grade and Montessori 7^th & 8^th grade, to use the tools the foundation has in place to evaluate requests received.  Each YiP group will receive an allocated amount of $1000 which will in turn be granted to area non-profit programs and projects as decided by the youth.

To make this program successful, WCF looks to the community of non-profits for help by taking the time to submit grant applications by October 21^st to the foundation office for funding consideration.    Guidelines and recommendations on how to apply are posted on the website www.winonacommunityfoundation.com.

The key focus in the program is the educational component for the students.  When introducing YiP to the approximate 70 students only 2 had ever heard of the term philanthropy.   The origin of the word is Greek and means love for mankind.  Today, philanthropy includes the concept of voluntary giving to promote common good.   Even people who are just moderately active in philanthropy are continually learning about the needs that are in the community today.  Being part of YiP and the grant making decision process will help plant the seed of giving by ways of time (volunteering) and the sharing of treasure even when there’s not much extra to give.

Youth bring creative ideas, fresh perspectives, and a refreshing look at the community as they work on the decision-making process developing practical skills through their involvement.  Mother Teresa once said “to keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it” WCF goal is to start the flame early and continue to fill the lamp with your help.
