Pictured Sue Cornwell, Bob Bartz, John Eddy and Steve Blue WCF Founder’s Award was established five years ago in tribute of the original founding members of the organization. The award is to honor an individual who has supported the community of Winona and the philanthropic endeavors of the community’s nonprofits. This person has proven time and time again to be an exceptional leader who has helped to build this community with their contributions of time, talent and treasure. For 2008, the WCF board decided unanimously to honor Sue Cornwell, one of our founders and an incredible community volunteer. Sue is well-known as a dedicated leader, volunteer, philanthropist, friend and mentor. Not only one of WCF founder’s, she was also the President for 14 years and then came back for 6 months as interim President in 2006. The list of activities Sue is involved in ranges from Shakespeare to Winona Health. But you may not be aware of her continued involvement as a mentor to staff and Board with WCF and surely other community groups as organizations grow and change. Sue’s services and direction have been and remain an integral part of our community’s success. This award included a grant to be given to the charity of her choice, which Sue granted back to WCF in honor of the staff and their continued dedication to helping connect charitable resources with community needs. Staff decided to give a $1,000 grant to Winona Volunteer Services (WVS) to help meet basic local needs during these tough times. This decision comes from knowing that WVS can leverage about $2 in purchasing power for the food shelf with every dollar received, as well as from knowing they have become a sort of clearing house for basic food and clothing needs. Local churches, the Poverty Roundtable, other area nonprofits, as well as County and City agencies direct people to WVS in an effort to avoid duplication of services and to provide efficient assistance. WCF staff felt this gift was a way of maximizing the charitable benefit for people in our area needing their services and they hope the gift inspires others to consider carefully how their gift creates impact. We thank Sue for her continued support. Pictured Sue Cornwell, Lisa Fakler
